The George

What: The George is the second pub project from JKS, James Knappett and Dominic Jacobs, following on from The Cadogan Arms. The ground floor offers a small selection of snacks and a few pub classics along with a variety of beers. Whereas, Upstairs at The George has a slightly more extensive menu which builds on the ground floor offering and serves as the main restaurant side of the operation.

Where: 55 Great Portland St, London W1W 7LQ

When: The ground floor opened in November 2021 with Upstairs at The George opening in March 2022

Signature/standout dishes:

Black pudding scotch egg with Oxford sauce

Devilled veal kidneys with toasted flor sourdough

Crispy Cornish boneless lamb ribs with anchovy & sorrel yoghurt (this is Cadogan Arms signature/standout too)

Beer Battered Dayboat Fish and Chips

Price: ££ - Expect London gastropub prices. At Upstairs at The George, a starter to share, mains and snacks with a couple rounds of beers came to just over £60 per person.

What the critics say:

Upstairs made this year’s Michelin Guide with Timeout awarding 4 stars, William Sitwell of the Telegraph awarding it 3 stars and Tim Hayward of the FT describing the venue as ‘Damn near perfect’.

What Eric Mustard says:

A hug of a pub. Warm, cosy and comforting, bringing with it that feeling you have when you’ve just arrived at your grandparent’s house. The old man in me can’t hide my appreciation for a good gastropub, as universally hated as that word is, sometimes there is no better description. Think wooden panels and golden taps, spouting cask and keg ales. Enough to make a true pub lover salivate.

A sports lovers haven too. Featuring a private viewing room for those of us who struggle to keep our emotions in check when it comes to our favourite teams. Useful too if you are looking to avoid being caught breaking your Qatar World Cup boycott but also an ideal spot if you want to skip the usual, tired old pub with sports offering combinations or even worse sports bars. Coupled with a short and sweet menu of British snacks and classics, what is not to love?

Upstairs offers the same warmth and armchair cosiness with an extended menu of modern takes on British classics, think original mix vs extended mix and both songs are equally delicious. This is paired with a superb selection of English wines, featuring all your favourite producers and more.
